PTO Meeting Tomorrow!

Please join us for our next PTO Meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, February 13th at 9:30 a.m. in the Library!  
Our guest speakers will be our reading specialists, Ms. Terranova and Ms. Huber and our librarian, Eva Thomas.  They will be speaking about how to select appropriate books for our children based on their age and reading level.  They will also discuss strategies that parents can use to promote our children's growth as readers. Upcoming PES events will be discussed and refreshments will be served! Hope to see you there!
Art & Garden Kickoff Meeting - This Thursday!
This year's Pocopson's Art & Garden Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 28th from 11am to 3pm.  Our Art & Garden event kicks off with a kids' fun run and includes a plant sale, vendors selling various goods (including PES student vendors!), a display and sale of students' art work made specifically for this event, delicious food, crafts, games and inflatables, and our fundraising silent auction.
This is a widely anticipated event at Pocopson that draws people from both our school community and the surrounding area.  We are looking for volunteers to serve on established committees to help this event happen.  You are welcome to grab a friend and serve on a committee together or come make new friends as you help us plan this fun and memorable event.  It's a great way to meet other parents and support your kids' school! There are plenty of ways to get involved - in any small way or big area that interests you. 
There will be two upcoming planning meetings for Art & Garden, both with different purposes.  Here are the details on these meetings:
1) Art & Garden General Meeting; February 15th at 9:30am in the cafeteria - This meeting is open to all parents with the purpose of providing a general description of Art & Garden and its various components.  Please attend if you are interested in learning more about Art & Garden and how you can get involved in a volunteer capacity.  Coffee and refreshments will be served.  We hope to see you there!
2) Homeroom Parent Art & Garden Planning Meeting; February 23rd at 9:15am in the cafeteria - This meeting is specifically for homeroom parents and will provide information on how you can collaborate with your teacher to create either individual art projects, class projects, or class baskets for the silent auction.  Coffee and refreshments will be served.  Homeroom parents, we look forward to seeing you there!
February Box Tops Collection Is NOW!


Clipping Box Tops earns our school free money!  We are having a school-wide competition during the month of February:   
·      A $10 Amazon gift card is raffled each week for all Box Tops collectors.
·      Top Box Top collectors will receive a Pocopson spirit wear bracelet. 
·      The top class in the school will earn a $25 gift certificate to the Scholastic book fair. 
Please carefully cut out the Box Tops, check expiration dates and put in a baggie with student name, teacher name and number of Box Tops.  Alternately, you can use the Clip Sheet found here: Box Tops Clip Sheet

4th Grade Ice Skating Party - Save the Date & Sign Up Your Child!


All 4th Graders are invited to a fun-filled afternoon with friends at Ice Line in West Chester on Sunday, March 11th from 4-6pm!

Please mark your calendars for this district-wide event and sign your child up by March 4th via the Google Doc that has been sent to you by your 4th Grade Homeroom Parents.

Calling All Volunteers!  Book Fair Volunteers Needed!  


Any hour you could give of your time would be great!  Help your kids shop for books at the book fair.  We will also need lots of help for Set Up, Clean Up & Donut Days!  Please look at the Sign Up Genius link below to see if there is a time that works for you!

All For Books: Your child’s class could win a Pup-peroni Pizza Party

Any donation welcome!  Support the PES Library, Stonehurst’s Library and charity!  For every dollar we collect for our school library for the “All For Books” Program, Scholastic Book Fair donates one book to charity.  Last year our school collected $795.50 for the PES school library and Stonehurst’s library plus Scholastic donated books to their own charities!  Donations can be made during the Book Fair at the “All For Books” Table.  The kids can drop their loose change directly into their class jar!  The class that has collected the most money by the end of the week will win a Pup-peroni Pizza Party!



Teacher Wish Lists: Attention Parents & Students… Don’t forget to look for the Teacher Wish List Table while shopping at the book fair.  This is a great opportunity to purchase a book for your child’s classroom!  




Pocopson's Publishing Center, The Patriot Press, is Online & Open for Business!

​The Pocopson Patriot Press is a publishing service for the students of Pocopson Elementary School.  Each student may submit an original story to be printed and bound for the fee of $20 per child.  One copy will be given to the student and one copy will remain in the school library to be enjoyed by the entire student body.  Principal Beaver reads every book and presents a Published Author letter to each student at an Authors-Only Book Launch Donut Party!  Patriot Press student-authors are listed in the Library card catalog system as published authors (students enjoy typing in their name to find their name listed with Dr. Seuss, Beverly Cleary and JK Rowling)!  This is a very special program and unique to our school run by the PTO's Patriot Press Committee.

FOCUS Parent Network discussion - Developing Winners in Life Through Sports
Tuesday, March 6th from 7-9 p.m.  in the Patton auditorium
Everyone wants to win. That’s the first goal in sports. But in youth and high school sports there is a second, more important goal: teaching life lessons through sports. 
This informative talk will focus on the TOOLS parents need to talk to their children about sports. Experts from the nationally recognized Positive Coaching Alliance will provide positive parenting tips on "coaching" our children. This talk will be followed by a Q and A session.

"iGen" Community Book Discussion


The UCFSD Wellness Committee is working to create awareness and conversation around the topic of the "iGen" generation. iGen is the first generation to spend their entire adolescence in the age of the smartphone. With social media and texting replacing other activities, iGen spends less time with their friends in person—perhaps why they are experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.
But technology is not the only thing that makes iGen distinct from every generation before them; they are also different in how they spend their time, how they behave, and in their attitudes toward religion, sexuality, and politics. They socialize in completely new ways, reject once sacred social taboos, and want different things from their lives and careers. More than previous generations, they are obsessed with safety, focused on tolerance, and have no patience for inequality. 

A highly readable and entertaining first look at how today’s members of iGen—the children, teens, and young adults born in the mid-1990s and later—are vastly different from their Millennial predecessors, and from any other generation, from the renowned psychologist and author of Generation Me.
