Friday is Spirit Day!
It’s time to break out that new spirit wear! Kids are encouraged to show their Pocopson Pride this Friday, October 6th with their red Pocopson T-shirts or any red, white, or blue! Spirit days will continue throughout the year on the first Friday of every month!
A HUGE Patriot Pride THANK YOU!
The PTO would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the parents that volunteered and came out to cheer on the kids at Friday's fun runs! It was a great day that was made even better because of your participation. Thank you very much to all of the families that have generously donated to our fundraising campaign. If you have not yet donated, we are accepting contributions through the month of October. As a reminder, you can donate online at our school's website (www.pes.ucfsd.org) or by submitting payment through the Patriot Pride envelope. 100% of proceeds go directly back to Pocopson to provide fun and enriching enhancements and experiences for your children. The PTO is very thankful for your support!
Please join us in the library on Tuesday, October 10th at 7:00 p.m. for our first evening PTO meeting of the year with guest speaker, Dave Listman from the UCFSD Communications Office. The agenda will also include a vote on teacher grants for this school year.
The week of October 16th – 20th will be our annual Coins for Kids drive and this year we’re excited to announce that the money raised from this event will go towards gift cards for students and families in the Harden Jefferson School District in Sour Lake, Texas, who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Each grade will act as “bucket fillers” by collecting coins – pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters are all welcome! Each morning on PETV, Mr. Beaver will weigh the buckets to keep us up-to-date on our quest to bring goodness to our friends in Sour Lake!
Trunk or Treat – Saturday, October 28th!
Save the Date! Saturday, October 28th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. PES PTO will be hosting our 1st Annual Trunk or Treat! The parking lot will be transformed into candy stations where families can decorate their cars and pass out candy from their trunks! Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated trunks!
Don't miss Pocopson Night at PJ Whelihan's on Thursday Oct. 19th!
What a better way to celebrate a no school day than dinner at P.J Whelihans! Join us between the hours of 5:00 - 9:00 pm and 15% of all sales will be donated to Pocopson!
Crayola ColorCycle, an innovative program to repurpose markers, is now available at Pocopson Elementary School!
Over the course of the year, we will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more.
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house including non-Crayola brands, dry-erase and highlighters! A drop-off box is located in the lobby of the school for your child to deposit the markers.

Box Top Collection:
October is Box Top Month!
Clipping Box Tops earns our school free money! We are having a school-wide competition during the month of October:
· The top class in each grade will earn a PJ & movie day.
· The top 100 box top collectors will earn a cool piece of Spirit Wear!
· Everyone who submits Box Tops will be entered into an Amazon gift card raffle. $10 gift card raffled off each week!
Please carefully cut out the Box Tops, check expiration dates and put in a baggie with your child’s name, teacher’s name and number of box tops. Alternately, you can use the Clip Sheet in the Communications Packet.
The Giant A+ Rewards program begins next week! Please go to Giant's website http://giantfood.com/aplus/register-card/ to register your bonus card and earn money for Pocopson Elementary. Every year Giant gives back over $1000 to PES because parents register their bonus card and designate Pocopson (#25843) as the recipient. It does not affect gas reward points. We typically have under 100 registered cards. Imagine how much we could earn if every parent who shops at Giant registers his/her card. It's free money for our school! See the Communications Packet for more information.

Our Art teacher, Mrs. Hage, has been running Recess Art for students who do not want to go out. She is looking for any unused yarns, fabrics and sewing supplies you may be able to donate. She has brought in looms and elementary needles and the kids are loving sewing and weaving! Thanks in advance for your help!
Update: The Discovery Zone needs packing tape and masking tape!
Any rolls you can send in with your child would be greatly appreciated!
We are getting more and more items to aid your children on their quest for creativity! To keep the creativity going - we are always in need of donations of “consumables”, that is items that once used, cannot be used again. The following is a partial list - but if you want to send something not listed, PLEASE DO!
Making items from Duct tape is an ABSOLUTE favorite project, so we run out very quickly. Any donations of Duct Tape are GREATLY appreciated. Also - any “craft scraps” - paper, ribbon, washi tape, stamps, etc.
If you can provide any of these items, please send them in with your child or drop them at the office. We thank you SO much.

Childrearing expert and author, Dr. Tedd Tripp, is offering a parenting seminar at Hillendale Elementary School, on Saturday, October 14th at 7:00 PM.
Hosted by Hope Presbyterian Church in Garnet Valley, Getting to the Heart of Your Child is a one-evening seminar featuring Dr. Tripp, an educator and former pastor, who has taught childrearing in every state of the union and some 40 different countries. His seminar videos, books and teaching materials are widely used throughout the world. Dr. Tripp is known for his book, The Shepherding a Child’s Heart, which is a paradigm shift for many parents. Most approaches to parenting are focused on managing and controlling behavior. Dr. Tripp’s approach is focused on nurture – on helping the child to understand the motivational things that push and pull within. His concern is with providing children the tools to identify both negative and positive motivations, things, for example, like pride rather than humility, anger rather than peace-making, or covetousness rather than generosity.
This seminar is entertainingly presented, richly illustrated and filled with insights and ideas about how to engage children and deepen their understanding of themselves and others. The event is free and open to the entire community. Childcare will be provided.
Each week, the PES PTO shares an idea for how our students, faculty, and families can be eco-wise. Does your student have a green tip they’d like to share? Email Nora Baughan: firstname.lastname@example.org for a chance to be featured in an upcoming PES PTO Around our School communication! Be sure to include your child’s name and teacher.
Green Your Costume. Did you know that many costumes sold in stores contain toxic chemicals like PVC and phthalates? Yuck! Instead, get creative by going handmade and upcycled. Host a pre-Halloween costume swap, repurpose existing clothes, fashion costumes from recycled materials from your local second-hand store.
*** If you want to add information to our Around Our School communications, please email us at email@example.com. For Community News, please watch for the UCF This Week emails. The Community Bulletin Board is also linked on our PES Home Page.
